Run-Down of Instagram News in January
Take your minds back to last month. Instagram has become under fire for not deleting fake engagements and followers. Their strategy to overcome this is to utilise AI to detect fake engagements. However, this became criticised by Points North Group who claim nothing has been deleted.
Following that, Fyre Festival brought back a hell of a lot of conversations on misleading consumers through influencers. Following from this the CMA (competition and markets authority) announces fines to influencers that do not state #ad or #sponsored.
Now, What’s Happened Next?
Last Wednesday, a New York Attorney General announced a $50,000 settlement with a fake social media engagement company. This includes fake engagement on Insta but also Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and others.
The settlement itself is not a massive amount of money (well, it could be a lot more) but it is still significant itself. This now sets a precedent in all cases of fake social media engagement in America.
The AG stated: “With this settlement, we are sending a clear message that anyone profiting off of deception and impersonation is breaking the law.”
What Does This Mean For Influencers?
This is brilliant news to organic macro and micro influencers. This allows them to secure more brand deals and reach across more people in social now that fake users will be a thing of the past. This also allows brands to find the right influencer for them, reaching real people to get a real return on investment when partnering with them.
What do you think? Is this the right step for fake engagement for Instagram? Let us know.
